The solution is in your hands – Finding ways to improve the traffic situation in and around Nádorliget – A report on Újbuda’s first citizens’ jury

What happened during the first citizens’ jury held in jbuda and what were the lessons learned from it? What proposals did residents of Budapest’s 11th district make in order to improve the traffic situation in and around the Nádorliget housing estate?

In 2023 Újbuda decided – as the first from the districts of Budapest – to involve its residents in decision making regarding the future of the district in a new and innovative way.

The title and the focus of the citizens’ jury they hosted was:

The solution is in your hands – Finding ways to improve the traffic situation in and around Nádorliget

The event lasted for three whole days over the course of two weekends (2023 June 17th-18th and July 1ts).

Initially 9755 randomly selected residents of the district received a letter asking them to register for the Jury. From those who eventually did, 36 people were chosen by lottery to actually participate in the event. Members were selected in a way that ensured the overall makeup of the Jury would mirror the adult population of Újbuda based on gender and age.

In the past few years the streets in and around Nádorliget have come to be characterized by traffic jams and a severe lack of parking space. Members of the Jury spent the weekend and half together in the Gabányi László Sports Centre first learning about and discussing the different aspects of the problem then coming up with ideas for improving the traffic situation in the target area. At the end of the third day members of the Jury adopted a list of six proposals which they handed over to local decision makers. They also emphasized the need for other similar participatory processes.

This publication is the official report on the Újbuda Citizens’ Jury which was prepared by the organizers of the event and others who in different ways contributed to the Jury. The report details:

  • the concept and process of the Újbuda Citizens’ Jury
  • the adopted proposals and the process leading to the birth of those proposals, and
  • other results and outcomes of the Jury.
