Local Citizens’ Assemblies on climate protection (2020-2022)

DemNet continues its work for the development of citizens’ participation. In 2021, we will implement two citizens’ assemblies in Hungarian cities on the topic of climate change.

In 2020, we reached an important milestone in promoting participatory democracy, cross-sectoral dialogue, and active citizenship: the first official citizens’s assembly, initiated by civil society actors and coordinated by DemNet, was organised in Budapest. During the assembly, randomly selected residents of Budapest were deliberating on the topic of climate change, and developed recommendations for the Council of Budapest on how to tackle the climate emergency.

We firmly believe that the biggest challenges of our communities and divisive, complex problems, such as climate change, should be thought about and discussed together. In the hopes of the Budapest CA being only the first step on a long road, in 2021 we continue the work with the support of the European Climate Foundation, and we will implement further climate assemblies in two cities in Hungary.
